He was lost and alone. Then he found her.
And the future seemed more fragile than ever.
As a child, Landon Lucas Maxfield believed his life was perfect and looked forward to a future filled with promise — until tragedy tore his family apart and made him doubt everything he ever believed.
All he wanted was to leave the past behind. When he met Jacqueline Wallace, his desire to be everything she needed came so easy…
As easy as it could be for a man who learned that the soul is breakable and that everything you hoped for could be ripped away in a heartbeat.
My Thoughts:
I read Easy, by Tammara Webber, when it first came out, and fell in love! Eay was the story that turned me on to the new adult genre, and made me want more. When I heard that Breakable was coming out, and that it was Lucas' POV, I was ecstatic! This book had been on my wish list since its unveiling, and I have had very high expectations. Breakable was fantastic. It was so real, heartbreaking, emotional, and touching. Lucas' voice was authentic, and resonated deeply within me. Wow, Ms. Webber has delivered a beautiful and unforgettable story that will touch your heart, and never let it go.
Breakable flashed back and forth between Landon/Lucus' past and present. We learn of a young boy that was once full of hope, and love. A boy who had a close knit family that laughed together, and embraced one another. Then everything changed one day, when a horrible and violent crime was committed, and 13 year old Lucas and his father, would never be the same again. They moved in with Lucas' paternal grandfather. Lucas' father became emotionally distant, and unavailable. Lucas stopped caring about everything. He quit Hockey, he stopped socializing, and making friends. He became somewhat of an outcast, and the school bully, Boyce, took every opportunity to harass him. Eventually, when Lucas and Boyce engage in a huge fight, and wont admit it to the principal, they form an understanding, which leads to a great friendship. Lucas also becomes very close to his grandfather, and learns a lot from him. In High School, Lucas is very lost. He becomes apathetic about his education, drinks, smokes weed, and parties excessively. However, Charles (his father's best friend,) become a positive role model and support system for Lucas, and helps him turn his life around.
When Lucas begins to attend college he becomes even closer to Charles, his wife, Cindy, and their children. They become a surrogate family for him, but never can replace the family that he lost. As Lucas gets his life together, he ends up meeting Jacqueline. He is fascinated and attracted to her, but she has a boyfriend, and he is the tutor for her economics class, which means he isn't allowed to fraternize with the students. However, things don't always go according to plan, and we finally get Lucas' point of view as we follow his and Jacqueline's love story.
Breakable was brilliant! The main characters had so much depth to them, and we really got to know Lucas and all of his layers. I loved how the story flashed from past to present. It made me understand Lucas more. The horrible tragedy changed the course of his whole life. He really needed therapy, and his father to tell him that what happened was not his fault. However, his father was so stuck in his own grief, that he couldn't help his child. I loved getting Lucas' perspective on everything that occurred between him and Jacqueline. I was able to understand what he was thinking, and his motivations behind some of his actions. If you loved Easy, you will love Breakable! Even though Breakable is a companion story to Easy, it is not just the same story. We get Lucas' whole background, his life from age thirteen to the present, and the ability to really understand him on a deep level.

My Rating:
I give Breakable, by Tammara Webber, 4.5 Devastating, Life Changing, Thought Provoking, Powerful, Passionate Stars! Read the Contours of the Heart Series for a beautiful, unforgettable, and touching story, that will make you feel anger, pain, humor, and hope.
I'm a hopeful romantic who adores novels with happy endings, because there are enough sad endings in real life. Before writing full-time, I was an undergraduate academic advisor, economics tutor, planetarium office manager, radiology call center rep, and the palest person to ever work at a tanning salon. I married my high school sweetheart, and I'm Mom to three adult kids and four very immature cats.
I'm so glad Breakable is more than just an Easy Retelling. Lucas was such an enigma in that book so it'll be great to find out more of who he is.
