My Take on this Journey:
Let me preface my review of What Endures, by Katie Lee, by saying it was a beautifully written, emotionally charged debut novel that touched my heart. I'm saying that this book touched me in a very personal way. Sometimes, when you least expect it, and everything is going by very smoothly, you may take for granted that things will always stay that way. Not once, but twice in my life, me and my family have been stopped dead in our tracks when we least expected it. You not only have to face what has happened to your loved one, but learn how to live again, and move forward. Most times, that is not so easy, and you must endure what has been thrown in your path. You will never forget it, everyday you are waiting for the next shoe to fall, and the pain never goes away, though eventually it subsides. That is what I found in this story, that I could feel for these two lost souls.
Jason Kincaid is a professional baseball player for the Seattle Mariners living a pretty well to do, carefree life. He gets into a tragic car accident on a slippery road that leaves him in a coma for weeks. When he awakens, he see's a beautiful girl at his bedside, (his fiancé) but he doesn't remember who she is. The Doctor breaks the news that Jason has lost his long term memory, and there is no way to know if he will ever recover it. This begins the whirlwind of events to beginning a new life and trying to put the past behind them, but it is very difficult for Megan.
Megan Williams has known Jason since high school. She and Jason were married young, and divorced. They found each other again, and got engaged, and now they had to try to find the love they shared for one another again without Megan revealing Jason's past 15 years to him. The doctor advised her to let Jason remember her on his own or he may have a hard time trapped by the past.
The primary characters are wonderful in this novel. There is an immediate attraction that Jason has for Megan from the second he wakes up from his coma and lays eyes on her, though he doesn't remember her. Before he is to go home from the hospital, Megan moves out of their shared house in Seattle, and moves into a hotel to make things easier on Jason. She also gets his stepbrother, Tyler, to move in with Jason, because he cannot be alone.
Unfortunately, all Jason remembers is his childhood, and what he remembers is all negative. He remembers that he didn't like Tyler, and that they fought all the time. The same rings true with memories of his father, mother, and grandparents alike. Jason goes through nurses by the dozen and eventually he and Megan make an agreement to be truthful if Jason asks a question, her and Tyler will tell him the truth.
This novel takes the reader through a roller coaster of emotional baggage. Twists and turns, heartache, sadness, realizations, and bitter sweet realities. Your heart will ache for these two as they forge ahead through the darkness that has become their reality. The secondary characters are well rounded and give a three dimensional picture to this perplexed novel.
I loved each nuance, the traveling from Seattle, back to the small beach house where their love first began 15 years prior. The bits and pieces of memory as they seeped back into Jason's mind. He didn't know if they were real or dreams. This was such a heartbreaking and eventually heartwarming novel. You will feel for the characters as if they are a part of your family. Get your tissues ready, cause Ms. Lee has a writing style that explodes on the page. You will not be disappointed! This is a phenomenal debut novel.
I give What Endures, by Katie Lee, 5 Heart Felt, Lost, Lonely, Frustratingly Haunting, Enduring Stars!
