Synopsis:
Life is full of uncertainty, so what happens when a what-if from your past collides with your present?
Kaitlyn Thomas, a weary wife and mother, is taking a much needed getaway with her friends. All she wants to do is relax and rejuvenate on her weekend escape to the beach. Having a drink at the bar with the girls sounds like the perfect way to unwind. That is, until Kaitlyn hears a familiar voice from the stage that shakes her to her core. She grapples with her memory until Chris King, the lead singer of the band, walks up to her and eliminates the questions in her mind.
Chris King…the misunderstood bad boy who once saved her in ways that no one else could.
Kaitlyn’s friends beg to know the story behind this mystery man. Forced to revisit a painful past from which she has spent years trying to heal, Kaitlyn's recollection of Chris awakens intense feelings that she has kept buried deep inside her heart. Has time changed him, or is he still the same person Kaitlyn fell in love with so many years ago?
Marriage vows are sacred, but temptation is a powerful thing.
Seeing Chris again has caused a war between her head and her heart. In the end, which one will win the battle? Facing a difficult decision, Kaitlyn just wants to be sure of one thing when she walks away from this weekend—no regrets.

My Thoughts:

I was drawn to So Much It Hurts when I saw the beautiful book cover, and then read the summary of the story.  This story was told from the point of view of Kaitlyn, a wife and mother to an adorable 5 year old little boy.  She is bored in her marriage, as her husband, Michael, is always working late at the office, and even when he's home, he ignores her most of the time.  At one point in her life, she had big dreams, but then became a stay at home mom.  She's lonely, unfulfilled, and in desperate need of a vacation.  I could relate to Kaitlyn, as I am a stay at home mom also, and could understand how even though you love your child and husband, things can become routine and monotonous at times.  Kaitlyn takes a much needed trip away to have a girls weekend with her good friends Lisa, Allison, Tori, and Shannon.

While she's on vacation, the girls spend their days relaxing at the beach or at the pool, and their nights at the local bar.  One night, when she's at the bar, she runs in to Chris, a man that she had a special friendship with, and deep feelings for in high school, but circumstances were never in their favor.  Throughout the years, he'd always been on her mind.  When they see one another, it's like they're back in high school, and their feelings for eachother never left.  As the days of her vacation pass, they spend more time with one another, feelings become intense, and desires rekindled.  However, Kaitlyn is torn between wanting to be intimate with Chris, and staying faithful in her marriage.

After Kaitlyn's girl friends meet Chris, a sexy, and talented singer and musician, they want to know the details of how Kaitlyn met Chris.  So, she flashes back 8 years and tells the story of how she meet and fell for Trevor her first love, then Chris, and finally Michael when she was in high school.  The story she tells her friends touched on physical abuse, first love, passion, intimacy, and falling madly in love with the one person you cannot have. Overall, I enjoyed reading So Much It Hurts!  It had a great storyline with many twists and turns, that kept my attention, interesting characters, that I came to care about, and could relate to, and was fast paced!  However, some of the conversations were a little cheesy and unrealistic for my taste, and I wasn't satisfied with the ending of the story.  I felt like it was left unfinished.  I'm really hoping for a sequel, so that loose ends can be tied up.  I think that So Much It Hurts was a good debut novel, and I look forward to seeing what future works are in store for Melanie Dawn.

My Rating:

I give So Much It Hurts 3.5 Stars filled with Deep Friendship, Family, First Love, Longing, and Desire.  This story was fast-paced and something that every woman can relate to as a big chunk of it was a coming of age story, that dealt with the universal themes of first love, friendships, growing up, and learning about life as you go along.  I really connected with Kaitlyn and understood why she was in turmoil concerning Chris (the love of her life, that she never forgot) and Michael (her husband who she had made a family with.)  So Much it Hurts was very entertaining, fast paced, and had such an interesting plot.  This would be a great story to read while on vacation, by the pool, or at the beach.  For a fun and engaging story, read So Much It Hurts!

Excerpt:

When I walked into the class, I caught my breath. There he sat—the mysterious guitarist who had kept me swooning the past twenty-four hours. He glanced up at me just as my eyes and smile widened with pleasant surprise. I looked away, bewildered, trying to compose myself. Walking as casually as I could manage, I took my assigned seat right next to his.
“’Sup?” he said, acknowledging me with a slight nod of his head.
My breath hitched at the sound of his voice. The burst of adrenaline caused my heart to pound in my chest. He leaned toward me. The scent of his cologne awakened my senses with its crisp and refreshing aroma that reminded me of the sandalwood and cedar scents from my favorite clothing store in the mall.
“I’m Chris,” he said, introducing himself. “Chris King.”
“Hi,” I said as my mouth fumbled for words. “I’m Kaitlyn Davenport. You must be new here.” Well, genius, that was a brilliant observation. Duh!
“Yeah, I stopped by yesterday afternoon to get my new schedule and to check out the school. I just transferred here from Fairbanks.”
His deep brown eyes searched mine as I mentally struggled for the next thing to say. “That’s cool,” I managed. “Fairbanks is a good school.”
“Not the school,” he corrected, without even as much as a hiccup. My expression must have shown my confusion because he clarified his statement by whispering, “Juvie.”
