GR's Summary:
All she wanted to do was forget. Forget the memory of walking in on her boyfriend in the middle of, well, another girl. Forget how she had her entire life planned out. And, forget about being perfect all the time. Unfortunately, she was Whitney Vandaveer and despite the fact that she moved to the middle of nowhere – she couldn't.
He always knew he would never be more than nothing. No job, no money, no future. Cole Pritchett had accepted the fact that he would always be the screw up and he was okay with it. Until he met her.
Here's the thing they quickly found out – sometimes we all need a little help escaping who we think we are.
My Take on this Journey:
Escaping Me, by Elizabeth Lee, was written with the dual perspectives of Whitney Vandaveer and Cole Pritchett. Whitney Vandaveer comes from divorced parents since she was a young child. Her younger sister, Mallory decided to stay with her mother, a throwback, 60's hippy type woman, who always laid it straight on the line, no holds barred woman. She stood by her daughters through thick and thin, never criticizing, even if she thought they were wrong. They lived in the small country town that she was brought up in. Whitney decided to live with her rich, control-freak father, and step-mother. Whitney was 19, knew a life of privilege, lived without showing affection, did as she was expected at all times, and hung out with the proper people. Her sister Mallory, was brought up with love, affection, a carefree mother, learned hard work and how to make her own decisions. Mallory was fresh, off the cuff, funny, sensitive to her family, a wild child, drank a lot, and hooked up in the back of a pick-up when she got hammered. She was a wonderful friend and sister to Whitney. They never had a relationship until this summer, when Whitney came to stay with Mallory and her mother. It was almost like they had always been together. After Whitney's rich boyfriend, Wes, was caught in the middle of the act with some sleazy girl, Whitney leaves for the country to start fresh, and forget Wes.
Cole was brought up dirt poor, thinking he was a screw-up who would never be any good, and would never accomplish anything worth while. He was full of tattoos, piercings, sarcasm, a chip on his shoulder, and attitude. He had an older brother, Finn, who was a cop who stole Cole's girlfriend, Megan, who wasn't worth stealing. Cole had a volatile temper, and showed it one too many times. His brother threw him out of town, and sent him to the country, set him up with a job, and told him it was his last chance to get his act together. Cole wanted to be alone, make some money, have no attachments, and move on. What he found instead was Whitney, a beautiful rich girl, who passed out while running. Cole kept fighting with himself as to whether he should leave her on the road, or help her out. His conscience won out, and he delivered the beautiful passed out girl to her mother's front door, and so began the story of two truly opposites, who were more alike than they thought, in so many ways.
This novel was beautifully written, seemingly effortless, catchy, funny, beguiling, wanton, and fiery!!! The sexting, and red hot love scenes, were filled with steamy, fog your glasses, make your blood boil, melt the silk off your panties HOT!!! Cole Pritchett will definitely make it to everyone's Swoon Thursday list! I loved that Mallory and her mother showed Whitney unconditional love, what it was, and how to make her own decisions for the first time in her life. I loved that she learned to trust in herself and become a self confident young woman. Through encouragement, Whitney learned to fly. Her and Cole became everything to each other, and taught one another to trust again. This was all a slow process, that started by being friends, and then becoming lovers.
I like that there was no insta-love. If anything, Cole completely ignored Whitney at the beginning, though there was a definite attraction between the two from the start. Though Whitney was expected to find a rich husband, and turn the other cheek when there were indiscretions, I was happy that she turned her back on Wes, and his money, and went for the underdog. Though Cole was from the other side of the tracks, and always felt he wasn't good enough for Whitney, he fought for what he wanted, and actually deserved. Appearances weren't everything, money wasn't the end all, Whitney wasn't the typical snotty rich girl, and Cole wasn't a complete screw up. Cole could do it like no other, and for once a woman didn't just want him for his good looks, hot body, and his expertise in the bedroom! (Though Whitney was sure to not throw him out of there!) Once Whitney got a taste, she couldn't turn back. These two had numerous obstacles, but fought to overcome them.
I give Escaping Me, by Elizabeth Lee, 5 Slow Burning, Scorchingly Sizzling, Friction Flying, Combustible, Love Making Stars!!!

About the Author:
When I'm not writing or playing the part of wife and mother, you can find me dancing back-up for Beyonce, singing back-up for Miranda, or sunning myself on the beach with a drink in hand. Here's the thing about being born and raised in a small town—you have a very vivid imagination! Now, I channel it all to create stories where the girl always ends up with the right guy, first kisses are magical, and a happy ending is just that!
