Goodreads Summary:
Sadie White's summer job isn't going to be on the beach life-guarding or working at rental booths like most kids her age. With her single mother's increasing pregnancy and refusal to work, Sadie has to take over her mother's job as a domestic servant for one of the wealthy summer families on a nearby island.
When the family arrives at their summer getaway, Sadie is surprised to learn that the owner of the house is Jax Stone, one of the hottest teen rockers in the world. If Sadie hadn't spent her life raising her mother and taking care of the house she might have been normal enough to be excited about working for a rock star.
Even though Sadie isn't impressed by Jax's fame, he is drawn to her. Everything about Sadie fascinates Jax but he fights his attraction. Relationships never work in his world and as badly as he wants Sadie, he believes she deserves more. By the end of the summer, Jax discovers he can't breathe without Sadie.
My Thoughts:
Breathe is the first book in the Sea Breeze series by Abbi Glines. I enjoyed this book immensely. It was a very fast-paced light read. I grew very fond of the main characters in this story. Sadie is extremely mature for her age. The story begins the summer before her senior year in high school. She has an immature, irresponsible, selfish single mother who has let herself get impregnated by another loser, in a long list of losers. Her mother complains of her aches and pains and refuses to go to the job that pays the bills. Instead, she tells Sadie to take over her job as a maid. The next day Sadie goes to the mansion on the beach and convinces the head of the household staff to let her replace her mother for the summer. At this job, Sadie makes many good friends, who become like a family to her.
I loved the relationship that Sadie built with Marcus, a good looking college student who worked at the house as a server the last few summers. He teaches Sadie the ropes, and they become good friends. Then there are the rest of the staff workers, Ms. Mary, the head of the household staff who becomes like a second mother to Sadie, Amanda, Marcus' sister who becomes her good friend, Kane the bodyguard/driver, and the elder gardener, who becomes her chess buddy. Abbi Glines did a great job of developing all of these characters and their relationships to Sadie.
The first day of working in the mansion, Sadie learns that the owner is the one and only Jax Stone. He is a teenage heart throb and graces the walls of teenage girls bedrooms everywhere. Sadie falls head over heels for Jax, as he does for her. What I didn't care for was the fact that Sadie and Jax fell in love instantly, and I did not feel that this relationship was developed as slowly as it should have been. At first, the love didn't feel authentic to me and I was a bit disappointed by this. However, as the story continued, Sadie and Jax's love developed more and began to feel more real. It was fun to read about these two, their relationship, and all the conflict that they had to overcome.
I would recommend this book if you are looking for a fun, light read. Other then the insta-love, I felt this story was well developed. I loved all the characters, the plot twists, and overall story line. I would recommend this book, and I give it 4 1/2 Summer Lovin' Stars!

This sounds sweet, I am glad you connected with the characters. Sometimes, this is the perfect read for in between heavier ones.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kimba :) All of Abbi Glines books are phenomenal! You should check the Sea Breeze Series out! I love it :) Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteBreathe was a bit too cheesy for my tastes but Abbi Glines pulled it off so well that I loved it! Though Marcus Hardy is my favorite *swoon* hope you enjoy Because Of Low! :)

I totally agree with you! I loved Because of Low! It was my favorite book in the series, and I'm posting my review on it on Saturday :)
DeleteOh insta-love. I am not as big of a hater on it as many others are - I feel that if done right (which can be difficult), it can feel authentic - in the whole 'meant to be/love at first sight thing', stinks that it didn't entirely work for you at first.
ReplyDeleteLove abbi glines and am definitely planning on reading this series , i have heard each book is better than the last.
Can't wait for Never too Far & Woods story !
I am dying for Never Too Far and Woods Story! It's true -that's exactly how I felt while reading the Sea Breeze Series. I would read Breathe and thought, "how is she going to top this?" Then I read Because of Low and it's my absolute favorite! Then I read Cage's story and loved it just as much as Because of Low! All of her stories are so amazing! She is on my auto-buy list :)
DeleteYes she is definitely an auto-buy!!
DeleteHave you read her paranormal series, existence?
